Overview

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a powerful diagnostic tool—but one that comes with significant safety responsibilities. This comprehensive course equips radiologists, technologists, trainees and all other medical staff with the knowledge and judgment to ensure the safety of patients, staff, and themselves in the MR environment.

Developed by certified MRI Safety Officers and grounded in ACR guidelines and case-based examples, this course provides essential training on the physical principles, hazard management, screening, implant clearance, and role-specific responsibilities required to navigate MRI safety confidently.

Module 1:
Introduction to MRI Safety Culture

  • Understand the importance of safety in the MRI environment, the annual training mandate, and the regulatory framework.
  • Learn how MR safety oversight can impact operations, accreditation, and patient outcomes.

Module 2:
The Physics of Risk: Understanding MR Energies

  • Explore the physical forces at play:
    > Static Magnetic Field (B₀),
    > Time-Varying Gradient Fields,
    > Radiofrequency (RF) Energy
    > Cryogenic Hazards (Quench scenarios)
  • This module breaks down how each of these can cause harm if improperly managed.


Module 3:
Historical Lessons: The Colombini Case

  • A real-world fatality that changed MR safety standards forever.
  • This section uses the tragic case of Michael Colombini to illustrate how simple lapses in judgment can lead to catastrophic results.

Module 4:
Roles, Responsibilities & Certification Pathways

  • Clarify the definitions and duties of Level 1 and Level 2 MR personnel, MRMDs, MRSOs, and MRSEs.
  • Understand the importance of proper certification and delegation in maintaining a safe scanning environment.


Module 5:
MR Zones and Environmental Controls

  • Detailed explanation of MR Zones I–IV, access control, signage, badge permissions, and infrastructure layout to protect patients and staff.

Module 6:
Screening Procedures & Access Protocols

  • Learn the standardized processes for pre-scan screening, including for implants and devices.

Magnet Quench Protocols & Emergency Response

  • What to do when a magnet quench occurs—planned or spontaneous.
  • Covers quench hatches, door swing implications, and asphyxiation risk management.

Module 10:
MR Safety for Special Populations

Special considerations for:

  • Pregnant staff and patients
  • Pediatric and neonatal patients
  • Detainees and parolees
  • Claustrophobic or sedated individuals


Module 11:
Patient Monitoring & Communication

  • How to ensure effective visual and auditory monitoring during scans.
  • Covers intercom protocol, camera use, and managing patients with impaired communication.

Module 12:
Alternative MR Environments

  • Guidance on PET/MR, interventional MR, MR simulators, and other specialized settings.
  • Emphasis on adapting safety protocols while maintaining core principles.

Module 13:
Incident Reporting & Continuous Improvement

  • All near-miss and real events must be reported.
  • Learn how data informs policy, training, and system-wide improvements across JDMI.
